“Buck Martinez Inducted into Blue Jays Hall of Excellence”

The Toronto Blue Jays will honor veteran broadcaster Buck Martinez by inducting him into the team’s newly established Hall of Excellence at Rogers Centre this Saturday. Martinez, who recently retired after covering over 4,000 games, dedicated almost forty years to the Blue Jays in various roles as a player, manager, and broadcaster.

Expressing his gratitude on CBC Radio’s Metro Morning, Martinez admitted that being recognized in this manner was an unexpected but delightful honor. He credited the Jays’ fans for their unwavering support throughout the years, acknowledging their role in making him feel like a part of their families.

Known for his distinctive broadcasting style, featuring phrases like “a swing and a drive” and “get outta here ball,” Martinez revealed that these catchphrases were inspired by his return to Toronto in 2010 and influenced by his time in Milwaukee. He attributed his broadcasting flair to his experiences as a player, recalling the camaraderie of teammates cheering on hits heading for the fence.

Transitioning from a career in professional baseball that began in 1967, Martinez admitted that retirement marked a significant change, especially as it was the first time in decades that he did not participate in spring training or engage with the team. Despite this shift, Martinez expressed contentment, confirming his recovery from cancer and overall well-being.

The Hall of Excellence, located on the 100 Level concourse behind right field, will not only honor Martinez but also showcase the contributions of other key figures who have shaped the franchise. Notable members on the team’s Level of Excellence, including Jose Bautista, Joe Carter, and Roy Halladay, will also be featured in the exhibit.

Reflecting on his journey to Toronto from the Kansas City Royals and Milwaukee Brewers, Martinez initially felt apprehensive but soon recognized the city’s passion for baseball. He praised the city’s embrace of the sport and highlighted the memorable 2025 World Series, particularly Game 7, as a testament to the team’s chemistry and the fans’ fervor.

Martinez shared insights on current Blue Jays’ challenges, acknowledging the tough season faced by first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. as a reminder of the game’s inherent difficulties, even for top players.
