“B.C. Government Directory Removal Sparks Transparency Concerns”

The British Columbia government recently removed its public employee directory citing cybersecurity and privacy issues, raising concerns among the public about reduced transparency. The removal of the B.C. Government Directory has left individuals without access to contact details of government employees, such as emails and phone numbers.

According to Ryan Stuart, the community engagement lead at the Outdoor Recreation Council of B.C., the restricted directory access poses challenges in connecting with the right officials for various matters. Stuart emphasized the importance of being able to directly contact specific individuals for efficient communication and problem-solving.

The directory removal has particularly impacted small volunteer-run organizations affiliated with the charity, as they rely on government approvals for outdoor projects. Stuart highlighted the difficulties faced in navigating general contact channels, describing the experience as daunting and hindering their progress.

While acknowledging the government’s cybersecurity concerns, Stuart suggested exploring intermediary solutions that balance security with transparency. Similarly, B.C.’s Information and Privacy Commissioner, Michael Harvey, noted the importance of maintaining transparency in public bodies funded by taxpayers.

Harvey expressed the view that limiting public access to information could erode trust and emphasized the need for innovative solutions that uphold both privacy and transparency. He underscored the directory’s utility for understanding government roles and facilitating communication with key officials.

The Ministry of Citizen Services disclosed that cybersecurity threats prompted the directory removal, with a plan to introduce an updated version focusing on senior executives’ contact information. The ministry aims to enhance security by minimizing public exposure of individual employee details while providing essential contacts for government interactions.
