Kimi Antonelli made a remarkable comeback in front of his home crowd to edge closer to becoming the youngest Formula 1 champion in history at the Italian Grand Prix. Despite starting from the 19th position on the grid, Antonelli, driving for Mercedes, swiftly climbed to the front within 17 laps.
The race saw Antonelli engaging in a fierce battle with his teammate and title contender George Russell for the lead. Antonelli eventually overtook Russell with three laps remaining, securing his victory and becoming the first Italian to win at Monza in six decades.
Expressing his elation over the win, Antonelli exclaimed on team radio, “Oh my God … It feels like a dream.” Reflecting on his unexpected victory, he later stated, “Unbelievable, unbelievable. I am so happy, I could not have imagined to be here today but we managed to pull it off and I am really, really happy.”
This victory marked one of the most impressive comebacks in Grand Prix history, as Antonelli’s triumph from the 19th starting position ranks as the second furthest back any driver has won a race, second only to John Watson’s victory in 1983 starting from 22nd place.
Antonelli’s win not only thrilled the audience but also offered a glimmer of hope after Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc’s early crash at the team’s home race. Max Verstappen secured the third spot, trailing behind the two dominant Mercedes cars, followed by the McLaren duo of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri.
With this victory, Antonelli clinched his seventh win of the season, further solidifying his lead in the championship standings with a 66-point advantage over Russell. Despite facing a grid penalty at Monza due to a power unit swap, Antonelli’s commanding performance showcased his dominance in the title race.
As Antonelli emerged victorious, emotions ran high among fans, with many left in tears witnessing the intense race at Monza. The Mercedes teammates, Antonelli and Russell, engaged in a strategic battle for the lead, eventually leading to Antonelli’s triumphant overtaking move on Russell in the closing laps of the race.
The Mercedes team’s decision to pit Antonelli under the virtual safety car provided him with fresh tires and the necessary pace to chase down Russell for the lead once again. Despite a brief setback when Antonelli ran through the gravel, his remarkable speed allowed him to swiftly recover and secure the lead, ultimately sealing his remarkable comeback victory.
