Chester, a city in the UK hailed as the ‘world’s most beautiful,’ piqued my interest despite the dreary British weather on my visit. Despite initial skepticism, within just 30 minutes of exploring, the charm of Chester became unmistakably evident.
The city, seemingly frozen in time, welcomes you through the ancient City Walls, the oldest and most complete Roman walls in Britain, spanning almost two miles. A stroll along these fortifications offers breathtaking views of the city and its surroundings in a 45-minute loop.
Descending back to street level, the archways lead to a high street adorned with slightly skewed buildings housing independent shops, bookstores, and cozy cafes intermingled with larger chain stores, catering to both locals and tourists alike.
The timber-framed ‘Rows’ lining the high street provide a covered walkway, offering a unique shopping experience. Despite the weather, the high street buzzed with shoppers and tourists, a rare sight in modern times.
Beyond the historical City Walls, Chester Cathedral, the Roman Amphitheatre, and the famous Suspension Bridge from Hollyoaks beckon history enthusiasts and TV fans alike. Families can enjoy a visit to Chester Zoo, home to over 30,000 animals, just a short drive away.
Chester’s nightlife scene boasts a mix of traditional pubs, modern breweries, and upscale bars, offering a laid-back atmosphere compared to neighboring cities like Liverpool. With its blend of history and charm nestled in cobbled streets, it’s no wonder Chester was crowned the world’s most beautiful city.
In a study evaluating destinations based on the ‘golden ratio,’ Chester emerged as the top choice due to 83.7% of its buildings meeting the criteria. The city’s allure extends beyond its architecture, with idyllic canalside walks, moorlands, and scenic parks like Grosvenor Park offering a tranquil retreat from urban life.
Despite the unpredictable UK weather, Chester’s charm remained intact, leaving a lasting impression. A return visit is on the cards, hopefully with better weather to fully appreciate the city’s beauty. For more information, visit chester.com.
