Barry Hearn Defends Ronnie O’Sullivan, Calls for Players to Step Up

Barry Hearn has come to the defense of Ronnie O’Sullivan after the snooker legend withdrew from The Masters, urging his fellow players to rise to the occasion in his absence.

O’Sullivan, a renowned eight-time Masters champion, made the decision to pull out of the prestigious tournament just days before its commencement due to medical reasons. Despite his recent tournament withdrawals, O’Sullivan was expected to compete in the London event.

Addressing speculations about O’Sullivan’s motives, Hearn dismissed claims of him being solely driven by money and emphasized that it is up to the other players in the sport to captivate audiences in O’Sullivan’s absence.

“I don’t believe Ronnie is solely money-driven; that’s unfair to him,” stated Hearn during an interview on the BBC’s Framed podcast. “He operates on his terms, setting exceptional standards as a unique talent we may not witness again in our lifetimes. While others may eventually surpass him, for now, he plays when and how he chooses, and he has earned that right.”

Acknowledging the disappointment felt by fans when O’Sullivan is absent, Hearn stressed the importance of other players stepping up to fill the void left by the snooker icon.

“It is essential for fans and remaining players to acknowledge their duty in filling the gap left by the remarkable Ronnie O’Sullivan. The sport thrives on characters like him, and the emergence of new talents is crucial. We may soon witness successors to his legacy, and their nationality remains to be seen,” Hearn added.

Highlighting O’Sullivan’s significant impact on snooker, Hearn expressed gratitude for the champion’s contributions while expressing optimism for his future endeavors. Hearn concluded by emphasizing the importance of O’Sullivan’s happiness above all else, noting the profound influence he has had on the sport.
