A man has been handed a 30-year prison sentence for the murder of his daughter and later sent disturbing text messages to his sons. Ryan al Najjar was discovered bound and gagged in a pond at a secluded country park shortly after her 18th birthday. She was killed by her father, Khaled al Najjar, who believed she was adopting a “too westernized” lifestyle, influenced by her brothers Muhanad, 25, and Muhamad, 24.
Ryan’s parents had sought asylum in the Netherlands to escape the conflict in Syria. Tragically, Ryan was brutally murdered eight years later due to her modern lifestyle, which her father disapproved of. Her body was found wrapped in duct tape in shallow water at a nearby nature reserve, with Khaled’s DNA detected under her fingernails and on the tape. Evidence suggested she was still alive when thrown into the water, and Khaled expressed regret for not burying her.
During the trial, it was revealed that the brothers had driven Ryan to the secluded area where the murder took place, implicating them in her death. Digital data from their phones and algae on their shoes tied them to the crime scene. Khaled, who had fled back to Syria after the murder, was tried in absentia and received a 30-year prison term. Ryan’s brothers were also convicted for their involvement and sentenced to 20 years behind bars.
Despite appearing integrated in the Netherlands, tension within the family arose over Ryan’s clothing choices and behavior, according to her mother. She described Khaled as abusive and controlling, often resorting to violence. Ryan’s rebellion at a young age further strained their relationship, with Khaled disapproving of her social activities and attire.
Family members spoke out against Khaled’s demeanor, with one sister describing him as oppressive and unreasonable. The household was filled with fear and unease due to his tyrannical behavior. Ryan’s defiance and clashes with her father escalated, leading to tragic consequences.
