“Elephant Killing Spree Claims 17 Lives in India”

An elephant on a killing spree has tragically taken the lives of 17 individuals, with four of them belonging to the same family, in a series of attacks. The incidents occurred in the West Singhbhum district of Jharkhand, India, starting on New Year’s Day. The young bull elephant has been responsible for almost 20 fatalities, some of whom have yet to be identified.

Among the victims were a wife, husband, and their two children who fell victim to a single attack by the elephant. Additionally, the beast gruesomely decapitated a man named Prakash Das. The most recent casualty was a woman who succumbed to her injuries in a local hospital.

The rampage peaked on January 6, with the elephant claiming the lives of seven people in Babadia and Sialjoda villages, including a family of four. The villagers are now living in fear and reluctant to venture outside. Despite efforts by wildlife personnel, the rogue elephant remains untraceable, prompting a joint search involving various agencies.

Authorities aim to tranquilize and relocate the elephant once located to prevent further harm. The search teams have been diligently scouring the fields but have yet to spot the elusive animal, which mostly strikes under the cover of darkness.

Residents in the area have been issued public service announcements on how to handle elephant encounters, emphasizing the importance of contacting forest officers for assistance. The rise in such human-elephant conflicts is attributed to habitat loss and human encroachment into wildlife territories, as highlighted by India’s Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change.
