Labour MPs Challenge Starmer’s Jury Trial Reduction Plan

Labour MPs are challenging Keir Starmer over his proposal to reduce the number of cases going to jury trials. Nearly 40 MPs have criticized the plan as “madness” in a letter to the Prime Minister. The letter, led by Labour MP Karl Turner, expressed concerns about the significant impact of limiting jury trials on the criminal justice system backlog.

David Lammy, the Justice Secretary, recently announced the intention to eliminate jury trials for criminals facing sentences of less than three years. This move aims to reduce the number of cases going to juries by half, from 3% to 1.5%. However, serious offenses such as rape, murder, and terrorism will still be tried by juries in Crown Courts.

The MPs argue that the solution to the court crisis should involve hiring more judges, increasing court sitting days, and addressing delays in prisoner transportation to court. They highlighted the shortfall in available court sitting days and emphasized the need for more resources to tackle the backlog effectively.

In response to the MPs’ concerns, Keir Starmer reiterated the importance of juries in the justice system for severe cases. The letter concluded with a plea for a reconsideration of the proposal, emphasizing the public’s support for preserving the fundamental right to a jury trial. The MPs urged the government to explore alternative strategies to address the backlog without compromising essential rights.

This development comes after a previous rebellion against the PM’s benefit cuts plan, indicating ongoing tensions within the Labour Party over policy decisions.
