“UK-Greece Pact Targets Human Trafficking Networks”

A groundbreaking migration agreement between the United Kingdom and Greece has been lauded as a significant step in combating human trafficking. Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper finalized the pact in Athens, emphasizing its role in targeting smuggling networks. The UK is set to offer training to Greek authorities to disrupt the trafficking of small boats used in perilous Channel crossings.

Furthermore, the government is intensifying efforts in North Africa to deter risky migrations into Europe. Cooper announced fresh funding for initiatives in Algeria, Egypt, and Tunisia, aimed at redirecting potential migrants towards local job opportunities.

Addressing the issue, the Foreign Secretary highlighted the destabilizing impact of illegal boat crossings on border security in the Channel and the Mediterranean. She stressed the joint commitment of the UK and Greece to combat illegal migration and dismantle criminal smuggling rings, recognizing organized immigration crime as a global menace that demands a comprehensive governmental response.

Collaboration between Greek authorities and the National Crime Agency has yielded success in disrupting an Athens-based smuggling and forgery network. Notably, recent operations led to eight arrests, the dismantling of a forgery facility, and the seizure of counterfeit documents and equipment.

A funding allocation of £1.5 million will bolster development projects in North Africa under the North Africa Migration and Development (NAMAD) initiative. Over 17,000 individuals have already benefited from training and social support through this program.
