Martin St. Louis played a pivotal role in reviving the Montreal Canadiens and will now lead them through a competitive phase. The head coach inked a multi-year contract extension during the Canadiens’ season-opening golf event. St. Louis, previously in the final year of his contract, is now committed to the team until the 2029-30 season.
Expressing his dedication, St. Louis stated, “I cherish my role, and if entrusted with the responsibility, I will continue. However, if that’s not the case, I am at peace with it. Coaching the Canadiens is where my heart lies.” Under St. Louis’ guidance, Montreal has shown consistent improvement.
At 51, hailing from Laval, Quebec, St. Louis steered the Canadiens to consecutive playoff appearances and an Eastern Conference final last season, following a rebuild phase. Initially hired as an interim coach after Dominique Ducharme’s departure in February 2022, St. Louis, with prior coaching experience at youth levels, was later confirmed as the permanent head coach.
Reflecting on the impact of St. Louis, team captain Nick Suzuki remarked, “Marty’s arrival marked a significant shift. During tough times, he kept the atmosphere positive and challenged us to improve. He’s undoubtedly my favorite coach, always pushing us to excel with his profound hockey knowledge.”
Heading into his sixth season with the Canadiens, St. Louis ranks as the NHL’s fourth-longest-tenured active coach, behind Jon Cooper, Jared Bednar, and Rod Brind’Amour. Recognized for his coaching prowess, St. Louis led Montreal to the playoffs in 2025, earning a Jack Adams Award nomination.
Commending St. Louis’ leadership, Canadiens General Manager Kent Hughes praised his communication skills and teaching abilities, anticipating further success in shaping the team. St. Louis, a Hockey Hall of Fame inductee in 2018, boasts a remarkable career as a player, accumulating 1,033 points before retiring in 2015.
St. Louis, who welcomed former Detroit Red Wings coach Derek Lalonde to his coaching staff for the upcoming season, aligns with the long-term vision of the team’s management. Both Jeff Gorton and Kent Hughes, the President of Hockey Operations and General Manager, respectively, secured five-year extensions with the franchise in October.
