“Michael J. Fox Honored with Order of Canada Elevation”

Celebrated actor and advocate for Parkinson’s disease, Michael J. Fox, expressed feelings of “pride” and “humility” when he was honored with an elevation to the companion level of the Order of Canada at Rideau Hall. Governor General Louise Arbour officiated the ceremony, where Fox was recognized for his significant global advocacy and open discussions about Parkinson’s disease.

Reflecting on the event, Fox shared his deep connection to Canada, praising the country’s values and its ability to adapt and progress. He emphasized his Canadian upbringing, love for Canadian music, and appreciation for the country’s cultural contributions, shaping him into a uniquely Canadian individual at 65.

Parkinson’s disease is a degenerative condition affecting the nervous system, leading to symptoms such as tremors, stiffness, and cognitive issues. Since disclosing his Parkinson’s diagnosis in 1998, Fox has been actively involved in fundraising for research on the disease and has candidly shared his experiences to raise awareness about the challenges faced by individuals living with Parkinson’s.

Fox commended Canada for its advancements in Parkinson’s research, particularly highlighting the country’s early adoption of deep brain stimulation therapy. He was among 51 individuals recognized with appointments or advancements within the Order of Canada that day, each acknowledged for their outstanding contributions to society.

Governor General Arbour commended the inductees for their dedication to using their talents and influence to benefit others and improve their communities. She praised Fox as a shining example of this ethos, emphasizing the importance of courage, imagination, and determination in driving sustainable progress.

Referencing Fox’s iconic roles in the “Back to the Future” film series, Arbour playfully noted that looking forward has always been more beneficial than dwelling on the past. Notable honorees included Yusuf Altintas and Nada Jabado, recognized for their achievements in academia, and Stephen Poloz, honored for his contributions to Canada’s economic well-being.

Other inductees included sculptor Ruth Elsie Abernethy, journalist Susanne Craig, and individuals recognized for their remarkable work in various fields, reflecting the diverse talents and contributions celebrated by the Order of Canada.
