Vladimir Guerrero Jr. made a stop to watch the TV screen in the Toronto clubhouse after defeating Baltimore 7-3. He smiled as the Minnesota Twins secured a crucial late-game out in a 4-3 victory over Cleveland, a team that Toronto is chasing in the race for the final American League wild-card spot.
With the playoff race heating up, the Blue Jays are actively monitoring the scoreboard. Saturday’s results narrowed the gap between the Blue Jays and the Guardians to just one game. Toronto holds the tiebreaker, intensifying the importance of each upcoming game in the final two weeks of the season.
Toronto’s 10th win in 16 games was fueled by home runs from Brett Bateman and Alejandro Kirk. The Blue Jays improved their record to 74-75 with 13 games remaining, facing opponents with sub-.500 records in all upcoming matchups.
Manager John Schneider acknowledged the high urgency and stress within the team, emphasizing the need for continued strong performances. Bateman, despite not being known for power hitting, showcased his hitting prowess with back-to-back home runs in the series.
The weak competition in the American League means that the third wild-card team will likely face a similarly matched opponent. As the sixth seed, the third wild-card team will play a best-of-three series against the lowest-seeded division winner.
In terms of reinforcements, the Blue Jays are hopeful for the return of key players like Trey Yesavage, Shane Bieber, and Anthony Santander. The team’s upcoming schedule includes matchups against the Detroit Tigers before hitting the road for games in Texas and Baltimore, followed by a season-ending series against the Cincinnati Reds at home.
Despite a mediocre season, the Blue Jays are aiming to finish strong and secure a playoff spot. Every game holds significant importance as the team pushes for a postseason berth, with FanGraphs giving them a 26.5% chance of reaching the playoffs.
