Jefferson-Wooden Smashes Record, Wins $150K

Melissa Jefferson-Wooden set a new record of 10.62 seconds in the 100-meter race at the Ultimate Championship, defeating Julien Alfred in a decisive victory. This win marked a slight improvement from Adaejah Hodge’s previous best time this year, falling short of Jefferson-Wooden’s personal record by just 0.01 seconds. The victory earned Jefferson-Wooden a prize of $150,000, the top reward for first-place finishers in Budapest this week.

Shortly after Jefferson-Wooden’s triumph, Kenny Bednarek surprised everyone by winning the men’s 100-meter race, outpacing Olympic champion Oblique Seville and securing his own $150,000 prize. Bednarek finished with a time of 9.85 and is a favorite for the upcoming 200-meter race on Sunday.

Jefferson-Wooden’s training partner, Sha’Carri Richardson, finished third in the women’s 100-meter race, showcasing her talent on the same track in Budapest where she had previously won world championships. Jefferson-Wooden’s victory over the Olympic champion was by a margin of 0.12 seconds, making it a clear triumph.

The highly anticipated showdown between Jefferson-Wooden and Alfred, who both held the second-fastest time this year, delivered the thrilling competition that track enthusiasts had hoped for. The event took place on a cool night in Budapest, with a packed audience witnessing Jefferson-Wooden’s dominant performance that ended the suspense early on.

In other events, Audrey Leduc from Gatineau and Sade McCreath from Ajax did not advance to the women’s 100-meter final after finishing 14th and 17th in the semifinals. Canada’s Marco Arop progressed to the men’s 800-meter final after securing third place in the heats with a time of 1:44.21.

Unlike traditional championships, the Ultimate Championship does not award medals; instead, athletes compete for a portion of the $10 million prize pool. This unique format aims to showcase top-level performances and create an exciting atmosphere for both athletes and spectators.
