“Ottawa to Hire Meteorologist for Extreme Weather Analysis”

The City of Ottawa aims to hire a meteorologist to investigate the recurring extreme weather events in Nepean. City officials emphasized that the analysis would not solely focus on Nepean or the west end. However, College ward Coun. Laine Johnson highlighted specific incidents, such as the Canada Day rainstorm affecting Ottawa’s western neighborhoods, the 2018 tornadoes, the 2022 derecho, and the 2023 ice storm, prompting the need for a deeper understanding of these weather patterns.

Johnson stressed the uniqueness of weather occurrences in Nepean and its vicinity compared to other areas within the city. To address this, her proposal urged the city to engage a qualified professional specializing in mesoscale meteorology and urban climatology to evaluate recent and historical weather trends in Nepean and Ottawa as a whole.

City officials believe that employing a meteorologist with expertise in local weather patterns could assist in identifying potential trends or anomalies. Tammy Rose, the city’s general manager of infrastructure and water services, highlighted the importance of determining whether these weather phenomena are random or part of a discernible pattern.

Knoxdale-Merivale Coun. Sean Devine described the challenges faced by his neighborhood, attributing vulnerabilities to infrastructure issues, topographic features, and weather dynamics. Devine emphasized the need for a better grasp of these weather patterns to allocate resources effectively to the most at-risk areas.

The aftermath of the Canada Day rainstorm saw over 6,500 basements flooded, particularly in Knoxdale-Merivale and College wards in Nepean and Bay ward. Some regions experienced up to 167 millimeters of rainfall, marking a once-in-200-year weather event. Subsequent windstorms on Aug. 12 exacerbated the damage and power outages in these neighborhoods.

While the city currently retains the services of a meteorologist for short-term forecasting related to winter maintenance preparations, the proposed hire would conduct a comprehensive assessment of weather patterns. The motion specifies that funding for the new meteorologist would be sourced from existing budgets.
