Canadian hammer thrower Ethan Katzberg faced disappointment in Budapest as he failed to make a mark in the men’s final at the inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championship. Despite his recent success, including a season-best performance in July, Katzberg struggled and finished last in the competition.
The event saw German athlete Merlin Hummel clinching victory with a strong throw of 81.46 meters, followed by Bence Halász from Hungary and Mykhaylo Kokhan from Ukraine. Katzberg, who had been on a winning streak leading up to the championship, had a challenging day with two no throws during the competition.
In another event, the Canadian mixed 4×100 relay team, with changes made by head coach Glenroy Gilbert, finished fourth in Budapest, falling short of expectations. The team faced tough competition from the United States, Jamaica, and Great Britain in the final race.
Meanwhile, sprinter Christopher Morales Williams, the men’s indoor world champion over 400 meters, narrowly missed qualifying for the final at the Ultimate Championship by a small margin. Despite his indoor success earlier in the year, Morales Williams expressed disappointment with his outdoor performance but remained determined to bounce back.
The Ultimate Championship also showcased victories for athletes like Jakob Ingebrigtsen, Masai Russell, and Mondo Duplantis, who walked away with significant prize money for their achievements. The competition, which featured a unique format and substantial prize pool, aimed to bring together top athletes in a TV-friendly international meet.
Looking ahead, the next Ultimate Championship is planned to take place after the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, providing track and field athletes with a platform to showcase their talents and compete for substantial rewards. The event signifies a strategic move by World Athletics to elevate the sport and engage audiences worldwide.
