Montreal Mayor Outlines City’s Expectations for Quebec Government

With the launch of Quebec’s election campaign set for tomorrow, Montreal Mayor Soraya Martinez Ferrada has outlined the city’s requests and expectations from the upcoming Quebec government. Addressing reporters on Wednesday morning, she highlighted three key crises affecting Montreal: homelessness and housing, infrastructure and mobility, and public safety.

Regarding homelessness and housing, Martinez Ferrada emphasized the need for ongoing funding to support 3,200 emergency shelter spots, including 500 seasonal beds, over a three-year period. She stressed the importance of creating sustainable solutions to homelessness and proposed establishing three specialized centers for mental health and addiction by 2027.

In terms of infrastructure and mobility, the mayor reiterated her call for the implementation of a REM light-rail system in the city’s east end to enhance connectivity and accessibility. She urged for a comprehensive public transportation network serving the entire metropolitan area and emphasized the importance of regulatory reform to expedite infrastructure projects.

On the topic of public safety, Martinez Ferrada called for the renewal of public safety agreements and increased investment in security measures, youth violence prevention, and urban safety. She advocated for additional police officers to ensure round-the-clock security in high-need areas and emphasized the importance of modernizing the system, including the adoption of body cameras for police officers.

Furthermore, the mayor emphasized the need for Quebec to involve Montreal in decision-making processes that impact the city, highlighting the importance of consultation and collaboration. This election campaign marks Martinez Ferrada’s first term as mayor, with the election scheduled for October 5.

Polls indicate that health and social services, cost of living, housing, and the economy are among the top concerns for voters leading up to the election.
