“Top Mayoral Candidates Divided Over Capital Pride Parade”

Three top contenders for mayor are preparing to participate in the Capital Pride parade this coming weekend, while a fourth candidate has opted out. Alex Lawson stated that he will not be marching in the parade due to the controversies surrounding Capital Pride in recent years. Instead, he will attend a separate event earlier in the week.

Lawson expressed that if the parade truly focused on celebrating love and inclusivity, he would have joined. However, he highlighted that Capital Pride has been involved in divisive issues, leading to his decision not to march. While he did not specify the exact controversies that influenced his choice, he cited several instances that impacted his decision.

On the other hand, Mark Sutcliffe, Jeff Leiper, and Neil Saravanamuttoo are all set to participate in this year’s parade. Sutcliffe and Leiper will be part of the official City of Ottawa float, while Saravanamuttoo will march with his team. Sutcliffe emphasized the importance of supporting the community and showing solidarity during the parade.

Fae Johnstone, executive director of Queer Momentum, emphasized the significance of candidates attending the parade as a symbol of support for the LGBTQ+ community. Johnstone criticized Lawson for not prioritizing the parade as the main event where the community comes together to celebrate.

While Lawson plans to attend a community breakfast event, Johnstone remarked that it falls short of demonstrating genuine support for the LGBTQ+ community. She also faulted both Lawson and Sutcliffe for missing a queer mayoral town hall, suggesting that true engagement is vital beyond photo opportunities.

Leiper stressed the ongoing need to combat homophobia and transphobia in society, highlighting the importance of recognizing and validating the LGBTQ+ community. Saravanamuttoo echoed the sentiment, expressing his desire to stand in solidarity with a community facing challenges.

The participation of mayoral candidates in the Capital Pride parade serves as a platform for them to showcase their values and support for the LGBTQ+ community, signaling their commitment to inclusivity and diversity.
