A woman from Prince George speculates that she might have been the inspiration behind Dolly Parton’s song ‘Jolene.’ Juline Whelan met the famous singer in 1972 and seems to fit the description of the young girl who reportedly sparked the creation of the iconic tune.
In an interview with a Norwegian television program called Lydverket in 2008, Dolly Parton shared the origin of the song’s name, mentioning a little girl with red hair, green eyes, and fair skin who introduced herself as Jolene.
Whelan, who was 10 years old at the time, recalls meeting Parton in 1972 during a family trip to Disneyland. She approached the singer for an autograph after enjoying her performance, particularly admiring the song ‘Coat of Many Colors.’
Although Whelan doesn’t specifically remember the encounter, she made the connection years later while watching a TV movie about Parton’s life in 2015. Researching further, she stumbled upon the interview where Parton recounted meeting a girl named Jolene, leading Whelan to believe she might be the one.
The resemblance between Whelan and the described girl, coupled with the frequent confusion of her name with ‘Jolene,’ strengthens her belief in the connection. Despite initial annoyance at being associated with the song’s character, Whelan now appreciates the tune as a classic piece of music.
While Parton’s ‘Jolene’ was inspired by a child’s name, the song’s theme delves into mature emotions, reflecting Parton’s plea to another woman not to interfere with her relationship. The track remains one of Parton’s most acclaimed works, recognized as the 217th greatest song of all time by Rolling Stone magazine.
Whelan, intrigued by the potential link to ‘Jolene,’ hopes to reunite with Parton during her upcoming performance in Vancouver. She reflects on the irony of sharing a name with a fictional home wrecker but has come to embrace the song’s beauty and significance over the years.
