A man from Toronto has been sentenced to 22 years in prison before being considered for parole after being found guilty of two counts of second-degree murder for the fatal shootings of two young women at a house party in Fort Erie, Ontario. The sentencing, presided over by Superior Court Justice James Ramsay in Welland, highlighted the perpetrator’s rap sheet of violent crimes and gun-related convictions, the execution-style murder of one victim, and the profound impact on the families of the slain women.
The victims, 18-year-old Christine Crooks from Toronto and 20-year-old Juliana Pannunzio from Windsor, were shot during a birthday celebration at a rental property on the Niagara Parkway in Fort Erie on January 19, 2021. The convicted individual, known as El Plaga in his rapper persona, was found guilty by a jury earlier this year.
During the sentencing hearing, family members shared emotional victim impact statements, expressing their deep sorrow over the loss of their loved ones. The court learned that an argument between the perpetrator and Crooks escalated, resulting in him shooting her hand with a handgun before fatally shooting her. Subsequently, the perpetrator targeted Pannunzio, who was unknown to most attendees, and carried out a calculated shooting, causing her death.
Justice Ramsay characterized the killings as displaying a disturbing disregard for human life. The court heard that the convicted individual had a troubled upbringing in a gang-infested area, with a history of violent and gun-related offenses spanning his teenage years into adulthood. While second-degree murder convictions in Canada entail a life sentence, the eligibility for parole, ranging from 10 to 25 years, is determined by judges. The defense sought parole eligibility after 18 years, whereas the prosecution advocated for a 25-year period before parole consideration.
Despite being given the opportunity to speak during the hearing, the convicted individual opted not to address the court. Family members of the victims expressed ongoing anguish and grief over the tragic loss, with Juliana’s stepmother and father sharing heartbreaking sentiments about their immeasurable pain and the lasting impact on their lives.
The court was moved by the heart-wrenching testimonies of family members, underscoring the profound and enduring impact of the senseless violence that claimed the lives of Christine Crooks and Juliana Pannunzio.
