“Dabrowski and Stefani Reach U.S. Open Doubles Round of 16”

Canada’s Gabriela Dabrowski and Brazil’s Luisa Stefani secured a spot in the Round of 16 in the women’s doubles event at the U.S. Open after defeating Italy’s Sara Errani and Austria’s Lilli Tagger 6-2, 7-5 in New York. Dabrowski, hailing from Ottawa, and Stefani, the second seeds, capitalized on five out of eight break opportunities and saved four out of six breakpoints against Errani and Tagger. The match lasted one hour and 27 minutes.

Having won the U.S. Open doubles title twice before in 2023 and 2025, Dabrowski and Stefani will face Japan’s Eri Hozumi and Slovenia’s Andreja Klepac in the next round. In another match, Leylah Fernandez of Laval, Que., and Indonesia’s Janice Tjen were defeated 6-4, 6-4 by New Zealand’s Erin Routliffe and Indonesia’s Aldila Sutjiadi in the second round. Fernandez and Tjen converted only one of their six breakpoint opportunities, while Routliffe and Sutjiadi broke three times out of five chances.

Fernandez also exited the women’s singles competition in the third round after a loss to third-seeded American Jessica Pegula. Meanwhile, Alexander Zverev advanced in the men’s singles with a comfortable win over Alejandro Tabilo, and Coco Gauff progressed to the fourth round. Naomi Osaka overcame Elise Mertens in a tough three-set match, and American Iva Jovic defeated Filipina Alexandra Eala in a thrilling encounter. Elena Rybakina and Iga Swiatek also secured victories to advance in the tournament.

However, it was a disappointing day for American players as Taylor Fritz, Madison Keys, and Amanda Anisimova were eliminated in the third round. Fritz suffered a surprising defeat to Francisco Cerundolo, while Keys was beaten by Zheng Qinwen after holding a significant lead. Anisimova fell short against Anastasia Potapova. Despite the losses, Learner Tien provided a bright spot for the home crowd by clinching a hard-fought victory over Jakub Mensik.
