U.S. President Donald Trump recently issued an executive order to change the name of Lake Ontario to “Lake America,” sparking mixed reactions among Americans, including dissent from some members of the House of Representatives.
Democratic representatives Tim Kennedy, Joe Morelle, and Debbie Dingell introduced the Hands Off Our Great Lakes Act to reverse the renaming of Lake Ontario and prevent any future renaming of Great Lakes. This move was prompted by Google’s decision to rename Lake Ontario to “Lake America” on its Google Maps app for American users, and reports that Trump urged Apple to do the same on Apple Maps. However, MapQuest has stated it will not alter the name.
Kennedy, representing a district bordering Canada, expressed his opposition to the name change in an interview with The Current. He emphasized that the executive order was a distraction from more pressing issues, such as economic challenges and strained international relations.
The relationship between the U.S. and Canada was highlighted by Kennedy, who described Canadians as not only allies but also friends and neighbors. He emphasized the deep historical and cultural ties between the two countries and pledged to protect the strong partnership that benefits both nations economically and socially.
Regarding the political landscape, Kennedy expressed confidence that the American people would respond to the current administration’s policies by electing a new House of Representatives majority in the upcoming election. He underscored the need for accountability and a reevaluation of the government’s direction, particularly in light of ongoing economic challenges and trade disputes.
In conclusion, Kennedy stressed the importance of unity and cooperation between the U.S. and Canada, citing shared values and intertwined interests that bind the two nations together.
