“Atari and Activision Revive 39 Classic Games on Atari 2600+ Console”

Atari, known for its iconic video games from the 1980s, has partnered with Activision to bring back 39 classic games like “Pitfall,” “River Raid,” and “Megamania.” The revival was announced at the recent Gamescom conference in Germany.

These games are now available on the Atari 2600+, a modern version of the original 2600 console from 1977. The updated system supports wireless controllers and can be connected to modern TVs using HDMI.

The 2600+ console was introduced in 2023, along with reissues of beloved titles such as “Pac-Man,” “Galaga,” and “Dig Dug.” It is also compatible with original cartridges from the Atari 2600 and 7800 systems. Moreover, the newly released games are backward compatible, allowing them to be played on the original consoles.

Mike Mika, studio head at Digital Eclipse, expressed that there is a continuous demand for these classic games. He highlighted the significance of the Activision releases, which signify a reunion after more than 40 years. Activision, now under Microsoft’s ownership, is renowned for franchises like “Call of Duty” and “Candy Crush Saga.”

Atari has undergone various ownership changes over the years but has recently refocused on its retro gaming roots. The company has acquired studios like Nightdive Studios and Digital Eclipse and has released new hardware like the Atari 2600+ console.

The reemergence of Atari’s classic games aligns with a growing interest in physical media among gamers. While digital downloads are becoming more common, Atari’s emphasis on physical cartridges, complete with box art and manuals, appeals to fans seeking a nostalgic gaming experience.

This revival of physical gaming media reflects a broader trend in the industry, with some gamers expressing disappointment over the shift towards digital-only releases by major companies like Sony. The return of Atari’s classic games in their original format has resonated with both longtime fans and a new generation of gamers who appreciate the tangible appeal of physical games.
