A surprise entrance accompanied by a cloud of smoke sets the stage for the return of the beloved ’90s childhood cartoon character, Darkwing Duck. Disney+ has officially given the green light for a brand-new series, 35 years after the original show first aired.
The new storyline unfolds as Darkwing Duck finds himself trapped in an unfamiliar world where his superhero legacy is unknown. A rebellious teen named Duckie, well-versed in his heroic past, emerges to coax the ego-driven vigilante back into action.
Although the narrative is fresh, it was crafted in collaboration with Tad Stones, the creator of the original series. Some iconic characters from the original franchise are making a comeback, with notable personalities lending their voices.
Mark Hamill will be portraying Drake Mallard, also known as Darkwing Duck, the protector of St. Canard and the enigmatic figure that lurks in the night. The announcement of the reboot on Instagram stirred mixed reactions among fans, particularly regarding the absence of Jim Cummings, the original voice of the lead character.
Seth Rogen, a Canadian actor, will voice the role of Darkwing’s scatterbrained sidekick, Launchpad McQuack, while Lizzy Caplan will provide the voice for his adopted daughter, Gosalyn Mallard. Venezuelan American actor Lilimar Hernandez, known for her role in Inside Out 2, will take on the new character of Duckie.
The original Darkwing Duck series debuted on the Disney Channel in 1991, spanning 91 episodes and earning an Emmy nomination. The crime-fighting duck also made appearances in video games for Nintendo NES and Game Boy.
Rogen’s production company, Point Grey Pictures, responsible for a recent special episode of The Muppet Show on Disney+, is set to produce the new Darkwing Duck series. The Point Grey team echoed the character’s catchphrase in a statement, expressing enthusiasm for the collaboration with Disney.
