The West Prince Caring Cupboard in Alberton, P.E.I., is set to relocate to a nearby grocery store to comply with national Food Banks Canada standards. Moe’s Your Independent Grocer in Alberton will be the new home for the food bank, as the store’s owner, Morris LeBlanc, undertakes renovations on the second floor for this purpose.
LeBlanc expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to support the community, emphasizing the importance of addressing food insecurity. Having personally experienced reliance on a food bank during his childhood due to financial challenges, he is determined to make a positive impact through this initiative.
The move aligns with updated national guidelines for food banks, which aim to enhance operational efficiency, credibility, and infrastructure standards, including requirements for heating, electrical systems, water supply, and accessibility features. The allocated 5,000 square feet of space, vacant for nearly two decades following a hardware store closure, will be revitalized for the food bank, with LeBlanc funding the renovation efforts.
Acknowledging the community’s needs and the ongoing support provided by the Caring Cupboard, LeBlanc highlighted the convenience of having a donation bin at the grocery store for customers to contribute non-perishable items easily. The initiative not only aids in food distribution but also facilitates the redirection of surplus food away from waste disposal sites, reducing environmental impact.
Recent statistics from Food Banks Canada’s poverty report card revealed concerning figures for Prince Edward Island, with a D+ grade overall, particularly indicating challenges in food security. Approximately 23% of Islanders face food insecurity, with over a third of food bank users being employed, emphasizing the prevalence of financial struggles within the region.
As the agreement between the parties is pending finalization, the Caring Cupboard is anticipated to operate weekly from the new location. While lacking a kitchen, the food bank will offer storage facilities like refrigerators and freezers to cater to client needs efficiently. LeBlanc aims to complete the renovations promptly, with the food bank scheduled to commence operations in early September.
