The B.C. Conservative Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) representing Abbotsford-Mission has announced her resignation, with Conservative Leader Kerry-Lynne Findlay expressing intent to run in the upcoming byelection to fill the vacant seat. Reann Gasper, serving as the B.C. Conservatives’ deputy whip, emphasized the thoughtful consideration behind the decision in a joint statement with Findlay. Gasper, a first-time MLA and licensed real estate agent, who was elected in 2024, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve the people of Abbotsford-Mission.
Findlay, who emerged victorious in the B.C. Conservative leadership race in May but does not currently hold a legislative seat, is set to contest the open position. Gasper voiced confidence in Findlay’s capability to represent their constituency, stating that allowing the leader to pursue the seat would fortify their team for the tasks ahead. In response, Findlay acknowledged Gasper’s support and outlined the party’s objectives to gain the trust of Abbotsford-Mission residents, unify their team, and generate momentum to challenge the NDP and establish a robust government for British Columbia.
Gasper’s commitment to collaborating with the Conservative caucus in the forthcoming months was highlighted in the release. Notably, Gasper made history as the first Black woman elected as a B.C. MLA since the 1980s. CBC News has initiated contact with Elections B.C. to ascertain the timeline for the byelection in the vacant seat.
