Shoppers residing in the Halifax Regional Municipality are expressing their satisfaction with the recent introduction of two new discounted grocery stores in their areas. Both establishments, located in Bedford and Lower Sackville, are branches of FreshCo, a discount brand under the ownership of Sobeys. These stores commenced operations on Thursday.
Qingyu Li, who had been eagerly anticipating the unveiling of the Lower Sackville outlet for several months, shared her excitement about the proximity of the store to her residence and the prospect of lower prices. Similarly, Bob Mitchell, standing outside the new Bedford store, highlighted the high cost of groceries, emphasizing the prevalent consumer need for cost-effective options in today’s market.
Statistics Canada reported a 3.1% increase in food prices nationwide from the previous year, particularly notable in July. This ongoing escalation, surpassing general inflation rates for the past 18 months, has led to a surge in the establishment of discount stores, as noted by an agricultural economist from McGill University in Montreal.
Pascal Thériault, in an interview with CBC News, acknowledged the growing popularity of discount grocery stores due to rising food costs, prompting consumers to gravitate towards these alternatives. The economist pointed out that while these stores offer lower prices, they may provide fewer services, prompting consumers to make trade-offs based on their preferences.
With the rise of stores like Gateway Meat Market in Dartmouth, known for its competitive pricing, Thériault highlighted that discount chains can influence the overall grocery market by compelling competitors to adjust their pricing strategies or enhance services.
Customers at the new HRM stores mentioned modifying their shopping behaviors in response to escalating food prices. Richard Merry and Chinwoke Nwafuluma both emphasized the financial strain caused by high food costs, expressing the importance of seeking savings opportunities.
These FreshCo stores mark the entry of the brand into Nova Scotia, joining several No Frills outlets under the ownership of Loblaws. Additionally, a new FreshCo and No Frills are scheduled to open in Dartmouth later this year.
