Jaime Wawro was deeply moved as she drove along Highway 39, reflecting on the tragic passing of Tanya Myers, who was shot while traveling on the same route towards Weyburn, Sask., almost a year ago. With the anniversary approaching, Wawro felt compelled to pay tribute to Myers.
Recalling Myers’ fondness for cats, Wawro decided to initiate a fundraising effort in her memory. She initially planned to donate to the Humane Society but later expanded her idea after noticing a request for sponsorships for cat rooms. Motivated to involve more people in honoring Myers’ love for felines, Wawro launched a GoFundMe campaign with the aim of collecting $30,000 to dedicate a new cat room at the Weyburn Humane Society to Myers. So far, the campaign has raised over $3,000.
In the event that the full target is not met, the funds will still benefit the Weyburn Humane Society, and the cat room will be named in honor of Myers as stated on the campaign page. Wawro expressed her enthusiasm for the possibility of seeing Myers’ name displayed in one of the rooms.
The raised funds will contribute towards the establishment of the cat room and support the ongoing operations of the Humane Society. Wawro admitted to not knowing Myers personally but has connected with her family post-tragedy, learning about Myers’ compassion for both people and animals, as well as her affection for loved ones.
Described as a devoted cat lover, Myers, aged 44, shared a special bond with her nine feline companions, understanding and meeting their needs, according to Penny Myers, Tanya’s mother. The overwhelming support for Wawro’s fundraising initiative has touched the family deeply, with Penny expressing gratitude to all donors for their contributions in memory of her daughter.
