“P.E.I. Government Combats No-Show Issue to Ease Road Test Backlog”

The P.E.I. government has identified a significant issue with a high number of no-shows for road test appointments leading to extended wait times for Islanders. Charlottetown has been experiencing prolonged wait periods of five to six weeks, a trend that has persisted since the onset of the pandemic.

Kristi MacKay, the operations manager at Highway Safety, highlighted the impact of last-minute cancellations on scheduling, stating that the lack of prior notice results in vacant slots and delays in the testing process. She emphasized the importance of alerting authorities in advance if one cannot make their appointment to avoid disruptions.

In a recent observation, Charlottetown registered 105 instances of no-shows for various assessments and courses within a month, indicating a concerning trend. MacKay emphasized that these individual absences collectively contribute to the overall backlog.

To address the situation, the province is actively seeking to fill vacancies for drive test examiners, with positions available in Summerside and Charlottetown. Additionally, the government is exploring the implementation of a queue management system for appointment scheduling through a dedicated app to streamline the process and reduce wait times.

MacKay proposed the idea of an automated cancellation system that would notify authorities of any cancellations in advance, allowing for efficient rescheduling and utilization of vacant slots for other applicants. The government, in a statement to CBC News, acknowledged the fluctuating demand for driving tests and advised Islanders to book appointments early through Access P.E.I. to mitigate wait times effectively.
