Off-Duty RCMP Officer Rescues Family from House Fire

Four individuals, including two teenagers and an infant, were rescued from a rapidly spreading house fire by an off-duty RCMP officer who quickly responded to the emergency and assisted a distressed man in extracting his family through a basement window.

Constable Anton Lorde, while returning home after his shift on July 18, noticed a thick plume of smoke rising into the sky, leading him to Mount Pleasant Street in the Whitney Pier area of Sydney, Nova Scotia. Upon arrival, he found a residence engulfed in flames with fire emanating from multiple areas. Initially assuming the house was vacant due to several people outside, Lorde began clearing the street for fire department access.

However, after learning from a neighbor that multiple occupants, including children, resided in the house, Lorde swiftly moved to the backyard and commenced knocking on windows to search for potential victims inside. A startled boy peered through the blinds as Lorde encouraged him to evacuate, not realizing the danger escalating within the property.

The situation intensified when the children’s father emerged, prompting a collaborative effort between Lorde and the father to rescue the trapped family members. With the father’s assistance, the children, including a four-month-old infant, were safely extricated through a basement window, with Lorde receiving the infant from the father.

Following the rescue, investigations into the fire were initiated by the police and fire marshal’s office, with speculations of intentional arson raised by the homeowner, Peter Magliaro. Despite the challenges faced, the family’s pets were successfully rescued, and the community rallied to support the affected family.

As the investigation unfolds, Magliaro and his family have relocated to temporary accommodation, with plans to rebuild their home at the site where they have resided for over three decades. Amidst the turmoil, the heroic actions of Constable Anton Lorde have been acknowledged, underscoring the critical role played by first responders in safeguarding lives during emergencies.
