A man suspected of stealing multiple Bird scooters in Windsor was caught on camera, as reported by the Windsor police. Surveillance footage has been released showing an adult male potentially involved in the theft of several electric scooters. The suspect, described as a hefty adult male, can be seen leisurely sipping a drink while observing a row of scooters lined up on a sidewalk. In the video, he is seen grabbing one of the scooters by its handlebars while still holding his beverage.
The investigation into the theft of Bird scooters began on August 5 after receiving a complaint that seven scooters had disappeared in the Walkerville area. Some of the scooters were later found stripped of parts, with one scooter discovered in a downtown alley, cut in half. It is suspected that the thieves targeted the lithium-ion battery packs inside the scooters, which have value for resale and contain metals like cobalt and nickel.
Bird Canada reported a significant increase in scooter thefts in Windsor compared to other cities, with nearly 50 scooters stolen in recent weeks. The suspect in the surveillance video was dressed in dark pants, a sleeveless blue T-shirt, and a baseball cap at the time of the incident. The Windsor Police Service is seeking assistance from the public to identify the suspect linked to the e-scooter thefts.
