The Codiac Regional RCMP is launching an initiative to crack down on open-air drug use in the upcoming two months. Superintendent Benoit Jolette, head of the Codiac RCMP, announced the start of the blitz this week, involving uniformed and plainclothes officers patrolling areas like downtown Moncton, Dieppe, and Riverview.
Jolette emphasized that the goal is not to aggressively target individuals but to focus on curbing illicit drug activities in public spaces and gathering intelligence on drug supply networks. While acknowledging that drug addiction is a health issue, he highlighted the need to address the unlawful use of drugs in public settings.
The intensified enforcement efforts, known as the two-month blitz, are a response to the escalating concerns raised by Mayor Shawn Crossman and other council members regarding public drug use. The effectiveness of the blitz will be assessed based on various factors, such as the quantity of drugs in possession, existing warrants, and previous instances of public drug use.
The initiative is set to conclude in October, coinciding with the budget discussions for 2027. Jolette mentioned that the data collected during the blitz could play a crucial role in determining the allocation of resources and personnel for future policing activities. The aim is to evaluate the necessity and feasibility of such operations based on actual on-ground situations.
In addition to this blitz, the Codiac RCMP has conducted various pilot projects this year, including initiatives focused on enhancing police visibility, community engagement, and collaboration with health networks to address mental health challenges. These projects aim to improve public safety and quality of life in the region.
As the community calls for more proactive measures to tackle crime and drug-related issues, the ongoing efforts by the RCMP and local authorities reflect a commitment to addressing these concerns raised by residents and businesses.
