A 15-year-old named Finn Holland demonstrated his love for animals by coming to the aid of a stranded shark near his home in Maces Bay, N.B. Upon discovering the injured shark on the shore, Finn and his family swiftly took action. Despite initial concerns about the shark’s condition, Finn managed to guide it back into the water, where it swam away.
The young hero described the encounter as both fascinating and nerve-wracking, given the shark’s size of around two meters and weight of 70 kilograms. The species of the shark was later identified as a porbeagle shark.
Finn’s mother, Jill Holland, expressed pride in her son’s spontaneous act of kindness, highlighting his natural inclination to assist without hesitation. The family, who had never encountered sharks in the area before, received confirmation from a shark expert that such sightings are uncommon.
Neil Hammerschlag, a renowned figure in shark research, emphasized the rarity of the encounter, noting that porbeagles typically inhabit deeper waters. The expert suggested that the shark’s presence in shallow waters may indicate distress, possibly due to illness or previous entanglement in fishing gear.
Moreover, Hammerschlag emphasized the endangered status of porbeagle sharks, attributing their declining population to overfishing. The species has been listed as endangered in the Atlantic Ocean since 2004 and is now protected under the Species at Risk Act.
Finn, overwhelmed by the community’s positive response to his brave act, expressed a sense of fulfillment in knowing that he had made a difference for the shark, despite its inability to express gratitude.
