“Saskatchewan Grad Explores Algae as Biofuel Source”

During the summer months, algae blooms are common in Saskatchewan lakes, presenting an opportunity for Denhyn Holowatuk to explore their potential as a biofuel source. Recently graduating from a program in agriculture and food production at Saskatchewan Polytechnic, Holowatuk is experimenting with collecting algae from lakes in southern Saskatchewan to convert it into ethanol, a renewable fuel.

By utilizing a fermentation process involving seaweed, sugar, and vinegar, Holowatuk aims to create alcohol that can be further processed to extract biofuel content. His interest in algae began in his childhood, where he would collect algae for his family, eventually turning it into a small business serving lake-goers and property owners.

As part of his capstone project at Sask. Polytech, Holowatuk initially explored using algae to produce organic fertilizers through fermentation. However, a conversation with Graeme Drysdale, a research chair for sustainable energy solutions at the institution, led to a shift in focus towards using algae as a fuel source.

Drysdale, inspired by discussions at an industrial trade fair in Germany, collaborated with Holowatuk to investigate the feasibility of algae biofuels. Despite skepticism from some experts about the economic viability of algae biofuels, ongoing research worldwide, such as in Mexico where seaweed is being turned into biofuel, suggests promising developments.

Holowatuk’s current project aims to determine the sustainability and economic feasibility of algae biofuel production in the long term. Challenges include the capacity for algae collection, but he remains hopeful for advancements in equipment to streamline the process. Ultimately, Holowatuk hopes to find a lasting solution for utilizing algae, reassuring lake-goers that efforts are being made to address this environmental issue.
