EverWind Fuels, a company focused on green hydrogen production, must provide additional information to the provincial authorities before proceeding with a proposed wind farm in Guysborough County. Nova Scotia’s Environment Minister, Tim Halman, announced the decision on the Harbour Hills Wind Project, noting that the company did not complete necessary baseline field surveys covering 6,000 hectares where 30 wind turbines are planned. These surveys, which need to be done within a year, should assess various aspects such as moose, bats, birds, turtles, plants, and lichen.
In response to the minister’s decision, EverWind’s spokesperson, Claire Parsons, mentioned that the company is evaluating the situation. Parsons reiterated the company’s commitment to the Harbour Hills project, expressing readiness to collaborate with Nova Scotia Environment and Climate Change to fulfill the additional information requirements and proceed with the environmental assessment process.
The Harbour Hills project, consisting of 107 turbines, is part of EverWind’s larger plan to establish wind farms in Guysborough County and other regions in the province. The company aims to utilize wind energy to power a green hydrogen and ammonia production facility in Point Tupper, Nova Scotia.
On a different note, one of EverWind’s potential buyers for ammonia, E.ON Group from Germany, has backed out from the deal, citing a shift in priorities away from hydrogen-related initiatives. Despite this setback, EverWind remains optimistic, stating that there is a growing demand for clean fuels and expressing confidence in securing necessary buyers for their project.
Meanwhile, another company, Bear Head Energy, which also intends to produce green hydrogen in Nova Scotia, has gone silent. Although Bear Head received environmental approval for its main facility in 2023, no construction has commenced yet. The company has been granted an extension until 2027 to begin construction, but it has not provided any updates on its progress or future plans.
According to David Layzell, a professor emeritus at the University of Calgary specializing in environmentally friendly energy systems, the global need for green hydrogen to combat climate change is evident. Despite delays in the hydrogen industry’s development, Layzell believes that green hydrogen production in Nova Scotia is feasible but may require more time to materialize.
