British Columbia has lifted a temporary protection order on the Salmon River less than two weeks after its issuance, affecting over 450 water licenses. The order, implemented on July 28 due to drought conditions, limited water usage to safeguard fish populations. It impacted 456 surface-water and groundwater licenses, restricting irrigation of crops like hay, alfalfa, and forage corn, as well as certain industrial uses and lawns.
Despite voluntary conservation efforts, the Salmon River has consistently shown low streamflow, prompting the protective measure. Water Minister Randene Neill indicated that the order aimed to safeguard Chinook salmon during drought but faced opposition from farmers and ranchers who sought access to the watershed during heightened wildfire risks.
The ongoing severe drought in many parts of British Columbia has led to drying habitats for salmon, according to the federal government. The Pacific Salmon Foundation’s chief program officer, Jason Hwang, raised concerns about the impact on the river’s salmon population, emphasizing the importance of protecting aquatic ecosystems.
Reports revealed around 50 adult Chinook salmon in the Salmon River, with worries about warm water and low flows hindering their journey to spawning grounds. The conditions could also affect juvenile salmon from the previous year, potentially impacting the river’s salmon population over the next five years and beyond.
Kevin Boon, general manager of the B.C. Cattlemen’s Association, highlighted the critical role of irrigation for ranchers, not just for crops but also to create green, wet buffers around properties to mitigate wildfire risks. Ranchers are adjusting irrigation schedules to conserve water while monitoring river flows to ensure fish needs are met.
Hwang stressed the need for optimizing water storage, usage, and efficiency in light of the current low river flows, urging proactive measures for future seasons. Balancing human needs with environmental concerns remains a priority for stakeholders involved in water management decisions.
