Unifor and General Motors have initiated talks for a new labor agreement, commencing negotiations at a central Toronto bargaining location on Monday. The union represents over 4,600 members across various Ontario GM facilities, including the Oshawa assembly plant, the CAMI facility in Ingersoll, and operations in St. Catharines and Woodstock.
During the opening of discussions, Unifor national president Lana Payne and GM Canada’s president and managing director, Jack Uppal, exchanged handshakes. The negotiation setting featured chairs arranged in a conference room with Payne seated in the middle and Uppal positioned directly across from her.
In a press release on Monday, Payne expressed confidence in the upcoming negotiations, building upon the established pattern agreement with Ford. She emphasized the importance of substantive discussions on GM’s operations and the future of auto jobs in Canada.
Unifor has set a deadline of August 21 to reach a tentative agreement with GM. Uppal, in a news release on the same day, conveyed the company’s commitment to the bargaining process and the vital role employees play in its success. He highlighted GM’s significant investments in Canadian manufacturing plants since 2020, ensuring job security for years ahead.
In a recent development, Unifor members approved a new three-year contract with Ford, which included annual pay increases and program commitments at Ford facilities. Additionally, Unifor and Ford agreed on a program benefiting laid-off workers from the Oakville assembly plant, aiming to provide a pathway to full employment by 2027.
As Unifor engages in negotiations with GM and other automotive giants, challenges such as trade uncertainties, tariffs, and the emergence of Chinese electric vehicles in Canada loom over the sector. Despite these challenges, Unifor remains committed to fighting for the Canadian auto industry’s sustainability and growth.
