“Bank of England Holds Interest Rates at 3.75% Amid Inflation Concerns”

The Bank of England has decided to keep interest rates steady at 3.75%, aligning with expectations from economists. A slight majority of five out of nine members of the Monetary Policy Committee voted to maintain the base rate, while four members advocated for a reduction to 3.5%.

This decision follows the recent decrease in borrowing costs from 4% to 3.75%, marking the fourth rate cut in the previous year. Despite this, inflation has risen to 3.4% in December, exceeding the Bank of England’s 2% target primarily due to increased tobacco and airfare prices.

Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey stated that they anticipate inflation to drop back to around 2% by spring, reassuring the decision to retain interest rates at 3.75%. He also hinted at the possibility of further rate reductions later in the year.

The base rate influences the rates on mortgages, loans, and savings offered by banks and lenders. Waitrose, a supermarket chain under the John Lewis Partnership, has acquired the Hersham Green Shopping Centre in Surrey, solidifying its commitment to the local community.

In other news, fashion retailer Quiz has entered administration, resulting in 109 job losses. The company’s website has been taken down, with affected customers advised to seek refunds through their banks or credit card providers.

Sky has announced price increases for some broadband and pay TV services, affecting customers who signed new contracts from February 4 onwards. The Bank of England remains cautious about further interest rate cuts, emphasizing the need for sustainable inflation reduction before any adjustments are made.
