Ricky Hatton’s passing was determined to be attributed to hanging when he was discovered deceased at his residence in Manchester the previous year. A pathologist officially classified the cause of death as hanging and confirmed no signs of suspicious circumstances surrounding the tragic event during the inquest. Notably, Hatton’s close circle, including family and friends like his son Campbell and former partner Jennifer Dooley, attended the proceedings at Stockport coroner’s court.
The former world champion was found at his £1.7 million home in Hyde, Greater Manchester, on September 14, 2023, at the age of 46. His long-time friend and manager, Paul Speak, found him unresponsive at the property after Hatton had last been seen alive by family members on September 12. Subsequently, Mr. Speak went to collect him for a planned trip, but tragically found him in that state.
Despite the grim circumstances, the coroner, Alison Mutch, expressed during the inquest that there were no indications or notes suggesting a premeditated intent for self-harm. She emphasized that Hatton had extensive future plans and concluded that the evidence did not support a ruling of suicide based on the totality of circumstances, including alcohol influence and medical findings of chronic traumatic encephalopathy.
Campbell Hatton, in his statement to the court, portrayed his father as a determined individual, both in sports and personal life, highlighting his generosity and strong family bond. The family believed Hatton was at his best in years and had promising future aspirations, indicating a lack of premeditation in his tragic passing.
Furthermore, post-mortem examinations revealed signs of chronic traumatic encephalopathy, a degenerative brain condition associated with repetitive head injuries common in boxing, shedding light on the challenges Hatton faced. Despite past struggles with alcohol and drugs, Hatton was remembered as a loving family man who cherished his close relationships dearly, leaving a void in the lives of his loved ones.
