Holiday penalties in England have reached a peak as the town with the highest number of students going on vacations during term time is disclosed. The Department for Education (DfE) confirmed a record 459,288 school holiday fines were issued across England last year. These fines, which increased to £80 per parent, per child, per holiday, accounted for the majority of fines for unapproved school absences.
Barnsley emerged as the holiday fines capital of England, issuing 5,275 fines to parents for unauthorized family holidays in 2024/25, equating to 1,672 fines for every 10,000 pupils. Parents risk facing penalties of up to £160 if fines are not settled within 21 days, with subsequent penalties escalating instantly to £160 for the same child within three years, as per Gov.uk regulations.
While some parents defend taking their children out of school for educational trips, others highlight the financial benefits of traveling during term time to avoid peak-season costs. Disagreements persist among parents on whether term-time holidays are disruptive to a child’s education, with contrasting opinions on the effectiveness of school fines in enforcing attendance policies.
Cllr Ashley Peace, Cabinet Support Member for Children’s Services in Barnsley, emphasized the importance of reducing term-time absences to maintain consistent learning experiences for children. The Department for Education reiterated the significance of school attendance to support children’s educational development and minimize disruptions in the classroom.
