MPs Urge UK Ban on Brazilian Butt Lifts

British Members of Parliament are pressuring government ministers to address the concerning issues surrounding cosmetic procedures in the country.

The Women and Equalities Committee has drawn attention to a neglected policy area, urging Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer to immediately prohibit Brazilian butt lifts (BBLs) within the UK.

The increasing demand for cosmetic surgeries, driven by social media and image-editing technologies, has raised alarms about the normalization of high-risk procedures like the BBL by influencers.

Back in 2024, Health Secretary Wes Streeting pledged to take action against unscrupulous cosmetic practitioners, starting with enhancing safety measures for Britons seeking procedures abroad following multiple fatalities.

Despite these efforts, the National Health Service (NHS) lacks records of patients who undergo treatments overseas.

Recent cases, such as that of Bonnie-Louise Cooper, highlight the dangers of undergoing procedures like BBLs in the UK, with some individuals experiencing severe physical and psychological repercussions, including fatalities.

Calls to crack down on unethical cosmetic providers have been ongoing since November 2024, with reports exposing substandard practices in numerous unregulated clinics offering hazardous treatments by underqualified personnel.

Tragic incidents, like the death of Alice Webb following a liquid BBL in a UK clinic, and the coma of Sasha Dean after a similar procedure, underscore the urgent need for stricter industry regulations.

Advocates are pushing for mandatory licensing of beauty clinics offering risky treatments like liposuction, along with legal requirements ensuring procedures are conducted by trained medical professionals with malpractice insurance, mirroring laws in Spain and Australia.

The Mirror’s Ban the Cosmetic Cowboys campaign, endorsed by Prime Minister Keir Starmer, emphasizes the necessity for swift and decisive action in safeguarding public health and well-being.
