A recent report by consumer advocate Which? reveals that some of the major broadband providers in the UK are not meeting customer expectations for reliable service. Instead, smaller alternative networks, known as “alt-nets,” are surpassing big brands by offering faster speeds, more dependable connections, and better value.
The study highlights that internet connection issues like frequent dropouts are widespread, with slow download speeds and service outages also causing frustration among consumers. Shockingly, 91% of broadband users reported facing issues with their service in the past year, indicating that only a small fraction of households enjoy trouble-free connections.
Among the prominent providers, Sky faced criticism for frequent dropouts, with 38% of customers experiencing this problem. Virgin Media also struggled, with 30% of users dealing with regular connection dropouts despite paying high bills. Additionally, a quarter of Virgin customers expressed dissatisfaction with slow download speeds.
Sky users were notably dissatisfied with the speed of their broadband service. Other providers like TalkTalk and Sky’s NOW service also received poor ratings from customers.
On the positive side, smaller UK providers like Zen Internet, Community Fibre, and Hyperoptic stood out for providing more reliable services compared to major brands. Among the larger providers, Plusnet excelled, outperforming competitors such as Vodafone, EE, BT, and Sky.
This trend aligns with previous research from Which?, showing that smaller broadband companies consistently outperform major providers in terms of reliability, customer service, and value for money.

In response to the report, a Virgin Media spokesperson emphasized their ongoing investments to improve services and highlighted positive rankings in various broadband categories. They mentioned that independent data positions Virgin Media as a top performer in the UK for broadband services.
