UK Readies for Digital Voice: Copper Phone Network Phase-Out Coming

In a mere six months, the UK is set to undergo a significant transformation in its communication network. Millions of additional households are now being alerted in advance of the upcoming switch. By January 2027, the country will bid farewell to its outdated copper phone network, making way for the introduction of Digital Voice. This innovative service will utilize broadband connections for calls, replacing the century-old copper wiring system.

This crucial transition demands attention from households as failure to migrate to Digital Voice could result in the loss of their existing landline service. A recent campaign dubbed ‘Don’t Put Off the Switch,’ led by Clare Balding, stresses the importance for homes to prepare for the digital era by verifying and adapting their landline services.

While the nationwide deadline remains six months away, the conversion process is swiftly progressing. BT’s Openreach, the operator of the UK’s largest broadband network, has issued “stop sell” notifications at an additional 112 telephone exchanges. Consequently, broadband providers reliant on the Openreach network, such as BT, Sky, Vodafone, and Plusnet, are now prohibited from selling or transitioning customers to older copper-based broadband and phone services in these regions.

Openreach has clarified that the “stop sell” action is initiated when a majority (75%) of premises within a specific exchange area have access to ultrafast Full Fibre. Customers aiming to switch, upgrade, or alter their broadband or phone service will now need to opt for a new digital service over the advanced Full Fibre network.

The recent implementation extends the total count of exchanges under the Stop Sell regime to 1,572, encompassing approximately 15.4 million residences and commercial establishments across the UK. Although the transition to full fibre and Digital Voice may appear daunting, it promises notable advantages like enhanced broadband speeds, more dependable connections, and a contemporary phone service better suited for today’s digital landscape.

Individuals uncertain about their home’s status can utilize the Openreach postcode checker to verify available services. James Lilley, Openreach’s Managed Customer Migrations Director, emphasized the significance of the Stop Sell initiative in expediting the nation’s transition towards a modern full fibre infrastructure. With copper technology’s capabilities diminishing, the focus is on facilitating the migration to newer, future-proof technologies.

The phase-out of legacy copper-based services in areas where fibre is widely accessible ensures a seamless transition to faster, reliable digital infrastructure for customers and providers. This strategy not only streamlines the maintenance of networks but also supports the industry-wide migration preceding the imminent shutdown of the legacy Public Switched Telephone Network in just six months. By then, a digital phone line will be a necessity for everyone.
