Museums, libraries, and heritage buildings are on track to receive protection through a significant new funding package aimed at enhancing art and culture.
The upcoming announcement by Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy will introduce funding for over 1,000 arts and cultural organizations throughout England, with a focus on providing £114 million to local museums outside London that are grappling with deteriorating infrastructure and limited financial resources.
This initiative is poised to benefit more than 150 locations, offering crucial support following years of neglect from the previous government. Government sources highlight that this move signifies a departure from the failed levelling up experiment by the Conservatives, which left numerous cultural institutions struggling for survival despite grand promises to communities.
In a time where divisive forces are at play, the government emphasizes the importance of arts, culture, and heritage in uniting the nation and preserving our shared cultural spaces. Lisa Nandy stated, “Culture serves as a unifying force during times of division, narrating our collective national story.”
Addressing the past neglect, she added, “The previous administration exploited our museums and heritage sites in divisive cultural battles while neglecting their financial needs, leading to their decline. Given their role as communal spaces, it’s unsurprising that those with a narrow view of our nation’s future seek to undermine these invaluable cultural and heritage sites.”
Underscoring the decline in UK library numbers, which saw over a 17% decrease between 2010 and 2023, resulting in approximately 764 closures, the funding aligns with the government’s efforts to tackle the cost of living and provide inclusive spaces for communities.
Emphasizing local culture in the funding allocation, the support aims to make arts and culture accessible in every community, not just in affluent or London-centric areas. The government’s commitment to restoring pride across all regions, enhancing access to world-class arts, and promoting local history learning has been reiterated by the Prime Minister.
The cultural sectors currently sustain 700,000 jobs nationwide, and officials anticipate that the new funding package will create thousands more job opportunities in the years ahead.
