Samsung has recently introduced its latest series of innovative foldable smartphones, potentially posing a challenge for Apple.
The tech giant from Korea has revealed three new devices, with the spotlight on the fresh design of the Galaxy Z Fold 8.
Departing from the previous Fold models, Samsung has opted for a wider and shorter “passport-style” design, offering a unique appearance when closed but transforming into a practical shape upon unfolding.
Featuring a spacious 7.6-inch display resembling a compact tablet more than a smartphone, the device is tailored for activities like streaming content, binge-watching, and mobile gaming.
This release is significant as Apple is anticipated to unveil its inaugural foldable iPhone later this year, with speculations hinting at a similar radical design choice. Samsung seems to have taken the lead if these rumors hold true.
Beyond design, Samsung is advancing in various aspects with the Galaxy Z Fold 8 being the thinnest and lightest Fold model to date, weighing only 180g. It boasts an enhanced hinge for improved durability and longevity.
The device’s larger display now incorporates Vision Booster technology and an anti-reflective coating for enhanced visibility under bright sunlight.
Powered by Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor, accompanied by a 4,800mAh battery capable of rapid charging to 63% in just half an hour.
Equipped with a dual-camera system for competent photography, fortified with Gorilla Glass for protection against scratches and impacts.
Additionally, Samsung has integrated its latest Galaxy AI tools for enhanced photo editing, productivity features, and search capabilities.
The Galaxy Z Fold 8 is priced from £1,699 and is available for pre-order, contrasting with the anticipated foldable iPhone from Apple, expected later this year with a potential price tag exceeding £2,000.
Alongside the Fold 8, Samsung has also introduced the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, resembling last year’s Fold 7 but featuring upgrades such as the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chip and a significant camera enhancement.
The rear camera system now includes a 200MP main sensor, a 50MP ultra-wide lens, and a 10MP telephoto camera, promising improved low-light photography and 8K video recording.
The Fold 8 Ultra adopts a new Flex Titanium hinge and a refined display structure for increased strength and reduced crease visibility, with a smoother unfolding mechanism.
A larger 5,000mAh battery ensures extended usage with fast charging capabilities reaching 67% in around 30 minutes.

Completing the lineup is the Galaxy Z Flip 8, maintaining Samsung’s popular clamshell design while becoming thinner and lighter.
Enhancements include an improved external cover display, a robust aluminium hinge, enhanced performance, and upgraded camera features.
