A senior Member of Parliament in the UK is calling for the prohibition of “monster vape” kits that have the puff-power equivalent to over 8,000 cigarettes.
Dr. Beccy Cooper, a Labour MP and public health expert, is urging the implementation of the Tobacco & Vapes Bill to address legal loopholes that allow the sale of 100,000-puff vape packages in the UK.
The popularity of these kits has surged since the government banned disposable vapes last year.
Dr. Cooper, who represents Worthing West, expressed concerns over the availability of “monster vapes” that go against regulations on tank size and disposable vapes. She emphasized the need to close regulatory gaps through the Tobacco and Vapes Bill to safeguard public health.
According to UK regulations, vape tanks are limited to holding 2ml of nicotine e-liquid. However, some manufacturers are allegedly circumventing these rules by producing devices with multiple 2ml tanks that users can interchange.
Before the ban on disposable vapes, studies revealed that mega-puff devices accounted for a significant portion of the market, with millions sold weekly. The market also saw a notable increase in sales of high-puff vaping devices between June and October last year.
Material Focus, an advocate for circular economies, has warned about the economic and environmental impacts of “big puff” vapes. These devices, although meeting reusable standards, have raised concerns about their long-term effects and potential contribution to waste and pollution.
Campaigners have criticized the affordability of these devices, noting that users may opt for new ones rather than reuse them, contradicting the intent of the disposable vape ban aimed at reducing environmental harm.
While vaping has been promoted as a smoking cessation aid, health experts caution about the long-term effects, especially for non-smokers and children. The ongoing Tobacco and Vapes Bill targets future generations by prohibiting individuals born after January 1, 2009, from purchasing cigarettes.
