“Save Big on Summer Travel: Tips for Affordable Family Getaways”

As the six-week summer vacation approaches, families are starting to plan their annual getaways with an eye on saving money. Traveling during school holidays tends to be more expensive, with families of four spending an average of £716 extra if they choose to travel during these peak times, especially in July and August.

Experts suggest that being flexible with departure dates can lead to significant savings. According to Dawn Morwood, co-director of Cheap Deals Away UK, there are specific days during the summer season that offer better value for flights. Prices soar during peak travel dates in late July and early August, but there are opportunities for more affordable fares earlier or later in the season.

Avoiding the most expensive days in summer, such as July 22, 23, and 29, can result in savings of up to 40% on flight costs. Shifting travel dates by just a day or two can make a notable difference in overall holiday expenses. Checking school term dates for potential inset days before the official holidays can also help families avoid peak pricing.

While many parents prefer to travel in the first weeks of the school break, waiting until the last week of August can lead to better deals. Flight and holiday package prices tend to drop around August 28, offering a chance for a more budget-friendly vacation. Traveling from a Scottish airport outside of the country’s summer holidays can also lead to savings, as Scottish schools have different holiday schedules.

For instance, comparing holiday costs for a family of four at Zante Plaza Hotel & Apartments, departing from London Stansted on July 24 costs £1156 per person, with a total of £3466 including a free child place. However, traveling on August 28 and returning on September 4 reduces the total cost to £3076, saving nearly £400.

While traveling during term time may offer good prices in early June, parents should consider potential fines for taking children out of school. These fines can add up for each parent and child in the family, making it important to weigh the cost savings against the penalties.
