“Discover Spain’s Hidden Gem: The Serene Cíes Islands”

Most British travelers are familiar with popular Spanish island destinations like Tenerife, Lanzarote, Majorca, and Ibiza in the Balearic and Canary Islands. However, there is a lesser-known archipelago close to Spain’s coastline that remains undiscovered by most UK tourists.

The Cíes Islands, consisting of Monteagudo, Do Faro, and San Martiño, are just a short ferry ride away from Vigo city in northwestern Spain. Connected by a beautiful 1,200-metre sandy stretch named Rodas, these islands offer a serene escape with minimal tourist infrastructure.

Visitors expecting luxury resorts will be surprised as the islands are mostly uninhabited, with limited amenities such as a small shop and a few eateries. Access to the islands is restricted, with daily visitor quotas ranging from 450 to 1,800 during peak and off-peak seasons, respectively.

Renowned for its stunning beaches and turquoise waters, Rodas beach on the Cíes Islands was named the world’s best beach by The Guardian. The islands are often likened to the Maldives or Seychelles, offering unspoiled natural beauty and tranquil surroundings.

Hiking and scuba diving are popular activities on the islands, allowing visitors to explore the picturesque coastal trails and underwater marine life. As part of the Islas Atlánticas National Park, strict regulations ensure the protection of local wildlife and limit visitor numbers.

For those looking to prolong their stay, a scenic campsite overlooking the lagoon provides tent accommodations with comfortable beds and breathtaking ocean views. Camping Islas Cíes offers essential facilities, including a snack bar, heated showers, and recreational activities for families.

While Monteagudo and Do Faro are accessible by regular ferries, the southernmost island, San Martiño, can only be reached by hiring a private boat. Despite the additional effort required, a visit to San Martiño rewards travelers with a peaceful ambiance, pristine sandy beaches, and lush palm trees reminiscent of the Caribbean.
