England cricketer Jonny Bairstow has reached out to Sir Keir Starmer for assistance while he is stranded in Dubai amidst the escalating situation in the Middle East. Bairstow, part of England’s development team under the guidance of Andrew Flintoff, was in the United Arab Emirates for matches against the Pakistan Shaheens.
The scheduled match between the Lions and Pakistan was postponed due to the increasing conflict in the region, with the US and Israeli military actions against Iran intensifying and causing airports in Dubai to shut down, trapping tourists.
Iran has launched retaliatory strikes on Dubai, leading to disruptions, including at Dubai International Airport, preventing the cricket team from returning home. Bairstow took to social media, seeking help in Dubai and urging everyone to stay safe. He also tagged the Prime Minister, the British embassy in the UAE, and directly asked Starmer for assistance.
The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) emphasized the safety of their teams and staff as the top priority, stating that they are in contact with security experts and the government regarding the ongoing events in the Middle East. They have postponed an England women’s trip to Abu Dhabi as a precaution.
The conflict has also affected other prominent figures in the sports world, such as former Premier League manager Graeme Souness, who shared on social media being stranded in Dubai. The military actions could potentially impact the upcoming World Cup in North America, as they have resulted in the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Following the developments, Mehdi Taj, the president of the Iranian Football Federation, expressed doubts about their participation in the summer tournament, citing the recent events as a significant concern. He mentioned on Iranian TV network ‘Tehran’ that the current situation makes it unlikely for them to participate in the upcoming cup.
