At least four individuals have been wounded, and concerns arise that additional individuals could be trapped under debris subsequent to a significant blast that tore through multiple structures, causing their collapse.
Emergency responders swiftly arrived at the scene in the heart of the Dutch city of Utrecht after receiving alerts about a sequence of detonations that triggered a fire around 3 pm today. Pedestrians sought refuge in nearby shopping avenues while firefighting units endeavored to suppress the flames in Visscherssteeg.
Video recordings captured massive flames bursting from edifices along the street amid explosions, with a dense smoke plume enveloping the city center and rubble strewn across the thoroughfares.
The structural integrity of the buildings was compromised, rendering them precarious with fractures emerging post-explosions, hindering firefighters from entering. Consequently, the conflagration was being quenched externally with drone assistance. It is anticipated that firefighting teams will combat the blaze throughout the night.
A specialized emergency team from Alphen aan den Rijn was dispatched to assist in searching for any potential victims in the partially collapsed structures.
Sjaak Haasnoot, a spokesperson for emergency services, disclosed that the four injured individuals were transported to awaiting ambulances, and there could be others trapped beneath the rubble. The severity of the injuries sustained by the four known casualties remains undisclosed.
“It is currently challenging to ascertain the number of individuals trapped under the debris,” Haasnoot remarked. “Due to instability, the fire department cannot access the building.”
Authorities have advised the public to steer clear of the vicinity. An emergency services statement declared, “The fire department is conducting an investigation on how to safely search the collapsed and damaged structures to ascertain if anyone remains inside. Substantial damage has been reported in the neighboring areas.”
Margot Schroevers, an eyewitness who felt the explosions, recounted, “I immediately sensed the gravity of the situation. The ground was trembling.”
The Utrecht Safety Region reported that dense smoke in the area is impeding visibility, hampering emergency operations. The statement highlighted, “The fire department is responding cautiously and focusing on the search and rescue efforts within the affected premises.”
Each section of the buildings is being individually evaluated to determine if emergency personnel can safely enter, with gas supplies shut off in the impacted zones. Utrecht Mayor Sharon Dijksma informed the press that the police were probing the incident, with the cause of the explosion yet to be determined.
