Beware of Unofficial Phone Chargers – Safety Concerns Raised

An urgent warning has been issued to all Android and iPhone users regarding the dangers of using unofficial power packs to charge their devices. With many new devices now shipping without a charger, consumers are faced with the need to purchase adapters separately, typically costing at least £20 from official retailers.

The appeal of cheaper alternatives, such as unofficial chargers available on platforms like Amazon for under £8, may seem enticing to cost-conscious consumers. However, consumer advocacy group Which? has raised alarming safety concerns associated with these non-branded chargers.

Following an investigation that involved purchasing chargers from various online marketplaces like Amazon, AliExpress, and eBay, Which? discovered that nine chargers posed a risk of electric shock due to substandard manufacturing practices. Additionally, eight chargers were identified as potential fire or explosion hazards.

Among the findings was a counterfeit charger designed to mimic Apple’s USB-C 35W Power Adapter, complete with deceptive packaging bearing Apple’s branding. The investigation also revealed chargers lacking essential UK safety markings and devices with internal circuitry that could lead to overheating, fires, or explosions.

This isn’t the first time Which? has flagged concerns about unsafe electrical products being sold on online platforms. Sue Davies, Head of Consumer Protection Policy at Which?, emphasized the severe consequences poorly designed electrical products can have and called for stronger product safety regulations and enforcement for online marketplaces.

In response to these findings, Amazon emphasized its commitment to customer safety and partnership with Electrical Safety First to promote safe charging practices. The company assured that all products sold on its platform comply with laws and regulations, and any identified hazardous chargers have been removed. B&Q also echoed these safety commitments on its Marketplace platform.

Consumers are advised to purchase chargers only from reputable retailers or trusted brands like Apple, Belkin, Anker, and Samsung to mitigate the potential safety risks associated with cheaper alternatives. While official products may come at a higher price point, experts emphasize that the safety benefits outweigh the cost savings.
